• Law enforcement in the past
• The Development of the Jury

i) What is the common goal behind the various forms of torture you have observed in the above descriptions?

ii) Why do you suppose ancient and medeival societies could tolerate such brutal treatment of suspected criminals?

iii) How did the primary function of medeival torture differ from the primary function of modern sentencing?
