New Learner Crest

Enforcing Due Dates

i) Extension Application: Late penalties can be avoided in some circumstances if an extension is granted. Extensions on assignment due dates can be granted if the student submits an extension application form at least four days in advance of the due date. Please Note: Completion of this form is by no means a guarantee of an extension. The application must be reviewed and accepted by the course instructor before the extension is granted.

ii) Class Take-Up: Once an assignment has been taken up in class, late assignments are no longer eligible for submission. Assignments such as case studies are problem solving questions - they involve far more analyses than writing. There is a vast difference between actually doing a problem, and simply copying an answer in class. Therefore, awarding a grade for a copied solution would not provide a valid assessment of the student's ability or effort.

iii) Beware the Term Deadline: At a certain point in the year it is simply inappropriate to accept late assignments. To not enforce a final deadline will often result in encouraging some students to postpone some assignments indefinitely. Once we are heading into exams, the window of opportunity for turning in late submissions is closed. As soon as exam review week arrives, both teachers and students must be able to provide their undivided attention toward exam preparation.
