Lesson: 62

Topic: The Ontario Human Rights Commission

Objectives:

During this class students will examine the role of Ontario Human Rights Commission. Students will come to understand 11-step complaint process. Students will come to appreciate the fact that the Commission is always interested in settling the dispute between the two parties named in a complaint, and a Human Rights Tribunal is therefore a last resort. Finally, students will come to appreciate the fact that the Commission's objectives when dealing with a complaint is always the "restoration" of human rights, as opposed to punishment or even compensation per se.

Method of Instruction and Evaluation:

In groups, students will examine the resources provided in the links below regarding the OHRC complaint process. The group must then explain their respective process (or processes) to the class. The group may use any materials or strategies they wish (PowerPoint, skit, role play, board work, etc.). Note: A PowerPoint covering these processes is already provided within the resources below.
