Overview:

During our national Take Our Kids to Work Day, all grade 9 students at Holy Trinity School will accompany their parents, relatives, or friends to work for a day. This will provide students with the opportunity to link a variety of classroom and workplace experiences, as well as to understand individual jobs in the context of the working community. Workplaces will in turn get a first hand look at future employees and consumers. Students will receive increased exposure to the working world that will hopefully leave them better prepared to navigate their own career paths.

Assignment:

At the conclusion of the student's Job Shadow Day excursion, the student will prepare a two page report which explores the following questions:

1. How does the business/organization contribute to society? (In other words, what goods or services does this business provide? What needs or wants do these goods/services satisfy?)

2. What kind of careers or occupations are associated with the facilitator’s particular business/organization?

3. What nature of education and/or training is required for the facilitator’s occupation?

4. How has technology influenced or changed the facilitator’s job/field?

5. How does the facilitator’s job/field impact on the environment?

6. What resources are available that could assist one in learning more about the facilitator’s particular job/field?

7. What aspect of the facilitator’s job/field was the most surprising to you? (In other words, was anything about the job/field different than the way you imagined it?)

Due Date and Marking Scheme:

Reports are due the Monday following the national Take Our Kids to Work Day, and are to be typed or word processed if at all possible. The report will be marked out of 60. Remember that spelling and grammar will comprise approximately 20% of this mark. Please consult the marking scheme while preparing your report, and remember to hand this sheet in with your completed assignment.
