Lesson Plan
Lesson #18: Employment Contracts
Objectives:
During this class students will examine master-servant agreements which outline the relationships between employers
and employees.
Method of Instruction and Evaluation:
In a socratic lecture, the class will review the following points included in most master-servant contracts:
- the duties of the employer:
- pay the agreed-on wage or salary,
- pay agreed-on business expenses,
- provide a safe place to work, with any necessary skilled help,
- provide similar work to that agreed on,
- allow an employee to take a second job, if it does not interfere with the first,
- not assign jobs that are illegal or that violate terms of the agreement.
- the duties of the employee:
- be punctual and take only permitted leaves of absence,
- obey orders that are legal and reasonable,
- be loyal, honest, and competent,
- be moral and sober.
In addition, the minimum requirements specified by the Employment Standards Act will be analyzed. These requirements include:
- payment of Wages:
- minimum wage,
- overtime pay,
- vacations,
- holiday pay
- maximum hours of work,
- pregnancy or parental leave, and
- notice of termination of employment
Using the resources presented within this lesson plan, students will divide into groups of approximately 5 students each.
Each group will then develope a contract regarding a specified job.

Finally, the groups will share their contracts with the class.
