Lesson #18: Employment Contracts

Objectives:

During this class students will examine master-servant agreements which outline the relationships between employers and employees.

Method of Instruction and Evaluation:

In a socratic lecture, the class will review the following points included in most master-servant contracts:

• the duties of the employer:
  • pay the agreed-on wage or salary,
  • pay agreed-on business expenses,
  • provide a safe place to work, with any necessary skilled help,
  • provide similar work to that agreed on,
  • allow an employee to take a second job, if it does not interfere with the first,
  • not assign jobs that are illegal or that violate terms of the agreement.

• the duties of the employee:
  • be punctual and take only permitted leaves of absence,
  • obey orders that are legal and reasonable,
  • be loyal, honest, and competent,
  • be moral and sober.

1. payment of Wages:
   1. minimum wage,
   2. overtime pay,
   3. vacations,
   4. holiday pay

2. maximum hours of work,

3. pregnancy or parental leave, and

4. notice of termination of employment

Using the resources presented within this lesson plan, students will divide into groups of approximately 5 students each. Each group will then develope a contract regarding a specified job.

Finally, the groups will share their contracts with the class.
