Overview:
The student will use recent business periodicals, magazines, newspapers, or the Internet to create a 1 & 1/2 to 2 page report on a particular business.
The business must be one which has experienced a relatively high amount of success within the current market place. (The business does not have to make millions of dollars a year, rather, it should be a company which generates a high amount of revenue in relation to both its expenses and its initial set-up cost)
The purpose of your report is to explain why this particular business has experienced the success that it has.
Requirements:
Your report must include:
a) an explanation of what the business is (i.e. manufacturer, retailer, service, etc.);
b) a description of the product or service provided;
c) a description of the type of business organization (i.e. sole proprietorship,
partnership, corporation.)
Your report must then go on to explain:
d) how the business began, or how it has expanded;
e) the idea, innovation, or the business philosophy which is primarily
responsible for the business' success within its respective market;
f) conclude your report with any predictions regarding the future progress or
development of the particular business, as well as the market it is
performing in.
Resources:
Effective sources of information for this assignment would be newspapers such as the The Toronto Star, the Toronto Sun, or the The Globe and Mail. Magazines such as Time and MacLeans are also likely to be good resources. The school network provides excellent resources under the Canadian Newsdisc or Kiosk CD ROMs. Naturally, the Internet remains a convenient resource, with volumes of detailed information on a variety of businesses to be found at the web site entitled Yahoo's Business Directory.

The report will be marked out of 50, and remember that spelling and grammar will comprise 20% of this mark. Please consult the marking scheme while preparing your report, and remember to hand this sheet in with your completed assignment.
